Eveleigh Treehouse, Carriageworks | 2019
in collaboration with Nell

Eveleigh Treehouse responds to the history and character of the site’s former incarnation as Eveleigh Railway Workshops.

Situated on the traditional land of the Gadigal people, Eveleigh Treehouse is conceived as a site of belonging for adults and children alike, a retreat from the bustle of daily life. Built from steel and recycled hardwood, the two drop-like forms of the Treehouse are whimsical.

Our desire was to integrate the community as a key component of the construction process. The Eveleigh Treehouse required thousands of forged steel leaves, each individually hammered and shaped to ensure a non-homogenous outcome.

To realise the Treehouse, we partnered with Eveleigh Works to run a series of workshops where participants could learn basic skills in blacksmithing. Under careful instruction, they heated and hammered each steel leaf into its own unique form. Participants also engraved their initials on each leave, providing a sense of ownership to all involved.
